Suggested Answers for five matter cycles
First, finish the assignment of five matter cycles, which was sent to your gmail account. You opened it as a google Docs, then you shared with me as a collaborator. The students in the Thursday class have done it successfully. For those class members who were not able to attend the Thursday class and have a problem doing this, please contact me. I would be happy to assist you.
Second, it may be a good time to reflect your experiences of using the web-based platform (e.g. Class Blogger, Docs etc). Please use the comment function below to state what you think. It should include at least three parts:
(1) Overall experience
(2) several points of advantages, and why?
(3) several points of disadvantages, and why?
In addition, you are more than welcome to put more comments on this issue.

I have enjoyed learning how to use a blog. I think it is interesting and easier than emailing files to share them. Having shared users allows everyone to see the updates as they are made instead of having to email back and forth as updates are made. This saves time and space. It is difficult to keep up with all the different emails I have to check daily. That is the biggest drawback for me. If I could pick to use just one, it would be the blog and google docs through gmail. It seems that you can do anything through gmail.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed using the blog so far and being able to see how other classmates do their assingments too. It is easy to post things on the blog and get it done in a quick manner. I have a lot of things to do usually so it's nice to look on the blog and see the exact assignment due when and how to do it. The only disadvantage I see is that I check D2L daily and sometimes forget to check the blog. If there was a way to remind me to check the blog everyday than it would be nice and useful, but sometimes I forget to check it and just check D2L and than realize that new ideas or assignments have been changed or due. That is my only problem with it.
ReplyDeleteI like Google Docs because it is more convienant than trying to email a document to multiple emails and its always there for use, not locked away in a Word document. The blog is just OK so far. It is different and out of my comfort zone so it is taking longer to feel comfortable with it. As Whitney said, the disadvantage of it is its not included in D2L so it seems a bit inconvienant there because there is a different email and course info that needs to be checked. Also, I would like to see feedback and/or grades posted like D2L offers.
ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed using the blog. It is an interesting way to help students interact with each other, while maintaining a classroom experience too.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Docs, is very interesting. I have never used it before, and I like how you just invite the people you want to see the docs. It is very efficient.
Advantages: It is easy access and I will always be able to use the docs even when I graduate. It is simple.
Disadvantages: I would definitely have to agree with Tonya and Whitney about D2L. It just makes it kind of hard to remember to check this instead of D2L.
Other than that I like using the blog because you will be able to use it in the actual classroom with your students in the future.
My overall experience thus far in this class is good. Using the blog is different for me; this is the first class I have ever used it in, but I like it so far. The advantages, in my opinion, is how everything we need is on our class blog. It is really handy to have powerpoints and announcements at hand. Some disadvantages are having two separate email addresses (it is difficult to remember to check both), and I wish that we could view our grades online somehow so I would know how I am doing so far.
ReplyDeleteMy overall experience with the blog so far has been good. It's something I've never really done before, and I've enjoyed learning to use it. I've also enjoyed learning to use google docs.
ReplyDeleteDisadvantages- I agree with Meghan in that it's hard for me to remember to check both of my emails, and I definately wish there was some way for us to view our grades so we would know how we're doing. It's also hard to remember to check the blog as opposed to D2L.
Advantages- The blog is an interesting tool that I think will be beneficial in the future. I'm enjoying learning how to actually use one. I also really think google docs is a great tool to know how to use ... It's much more convenient than emailing back and forth.
I think using the blog is a really good idea. Being able to have shared users allows everyone to view the updates and information that is being posted. It is definitely a lot easier than sending documents to multiple email. It is also a great way for the class to communicate and learn from each other. Google Docs is very helpful. The advantages of the blog is that we will be able to use it forever and it will become very beneficial in the future, especially when teaching. The only disadvantage is that we are not able to see how well we are doing in the class.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed using the blog pages and google documents alot more than I anticipated. At first I though I would have a hard time with it but I have come to understand it.I think one of the main advantages to using these systems is not having to mess with hard copies, handouts, and notes on paper. This class is wildlife conservation and I like how we try to reduce paper waste. I can also use these skills after this class ends. The only trouble I have with these systems is they are sometimes hard to navigate or distinguish which posts require immediate action. Maybe have a serperate note and homework sections.
ReplyDeleteMy only "blog" before this one is facebook. So, using this has been a new and good experience. It's been very handy to be able to get on and in the click of a button see what I need to do and then be able to share documents and even chat with the professor or other students if I have questions. It is very practical because like the professor said at the beginning of class, when you are out of college you won't be able to use d2l so this is a realistic utility. It also benefits the environment being paperless and all which is always a bonus! I think one of the main disadvantages for me is that not all my teachers use d2l so I don't really get on the internet unless I'm checking my email or facebook so sometimes I forget to check the blog. If there were reminders or something like that that could be emailed that would be fantastic. Also, having to scroll through all the posts is a little frustrating. I wish it was a little more organized. Other than that it has been great!
ReplyDeleteMy overall experience with the blog has been great. It's easily accessible and interesting to use. I wasn't that familiar with blog before, but now I think it's a great tool to use in the classroom. Even if it's just used as a classroom news forum. It's an easy paperless way to keep parents and students updated.
ReplyDeleteOne of the big advantages is Google Docs. I've used it a couple times before, and it is always so easy and practical. Like the video said, many people can edit it and there is only one copy. I also really like the posts that have the required and the optional. It helps me organize in my head what I need to do.
The only disadvantage I can think of is that sometimes finding posts are difficult. I like similar things to be in one place, like all the journal entries in one place, or all the powerpoints in one place, and with blogs it's arranged chronologically. I know there are labels, but I guess I'm just not used to it. This isn't that big of a deal, but if I had to pick a disadvantage, this is it.
The blog is a unique way you have ran you announcements. It has taken me some time to get use to it but overall I like learning new techniques I possibly use in the classroom when I am a teacher.
ReplyDeleteThe advantage to the blog is that I can always look back on it as long as you keep me shared to view this blog. As I stated before I enjoy learning different technology techniques for the future. The Google Docs. is a great way to collaborate with us. I like that I can get instant feedback without having many emails from you.
The disadvantage is that I am not use to visiting the blog everyday to look for new updates. I like the way all my classes are in the D2L website and it is hard for me to remember to look on the blog, but I think by posting an announcement on the D2L site to check the blog I will be able to remember better.
My overall experience with the various web-based platforms that we have used has been good. Although it is different than using using D2L, I have adapted to checking the blog just as much as I check D2L. I have not previously used a blog, so I didn't know what to expect. The blog is easily accessible and relatively easy to use, so I do not have any problems with it. I also like how everything is very organized on the blog because I am a very organized person and I like structure.
ReplyDeleteAdvantages: One big advantage is the easy access to all platforms; the platforms are all very user-friendly. Another thing I like about the blog is that, if I am signed into the blog, I am also automatically logged on my gmail account so I do not have to sign in to access my gmail account or Google docs. I also like the fact that other people, at my request, can view or edit any document I produce on Google docs. I also like that everyone can see everyone else's comments on the blog.
Disadvantages: A disadvantage of using the blog, is that sometimes the posts get mixed up
(one day post 44 will be at the top and another day it will be underneath post 41); I believe this happens when you edit the post. Another disadvantage of using the blog, is that when you try to post a comment, sometimes it says it cannot be processed and you have to try again. After the second attempt at posting a comment, you have to type in a certain letter-number combination as a security measure.
Using the blog is a new experience for me. I have found that Google documents are easier to use when working with classmates on class projects. The only disadvantage is not knowing my grades or progress in the class. I hope to one day soon use a blog in my classroom with my students and parents.
ReplyDeleteThe web based platform that we use in class is a tool that I feel is vital for many classrooms. The communication between teacher and student, and also student and student has grown tremendously with blogger and google documents. I feel this tool is a great addition for our Wildlife Conservation classroom.
ReplyDeleteThe advantages of having blogger and google docs starts with convenience. The ease of typing a document that my teacher can immediately grade or correct allows for faster and more efficient learning. Blogger allows students to stay in contact with projects and other classroom oriented disscussions much easier than regular email. Google docs allows a faster sharing of work and help from other collaboraters.
The disadvantages would have to start with know-how. The students in the classroom may not be computer savy or know much about computers and this can cause a problem with working Blogger and Google Docs. Besides that, these are great ideas and were integrated well with the rest of the classroom tools.
I really have begun to enjoy using the blog site. I think it is very convenient and user friendly. I have never used a blog before and I am glad I finally learned because everywhere you turn you hear something about blogging. I never really understood what that meant but after experiencing it during this class, I enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThere are many advantages of using a blog. One being the convenience of having one single area dedicated to a class and having the opportunity to communicate with classmates through it. I like how easy it is to access class information, student input, and homework assignments. The blog is much more interactive than D2L. Google docs is also a great way to share ideas.
Disadvantages: Sometimes it is hard to find the posts and to figure out what is new and what is just updated. The site is a little scattered and I think it would be more accessible to have different sections for the different activities and updates.
My overall experience of using web-based platforms is nice. I enjoy doing work on the computer and having hands on during class. This honestly allows me to learn more versus just hearing a lecture. I have also enjoyed learning how to create a blog and how to create and use google documents. Some advantages of these would be that I can use this information in my future with teaching, its an easier way to communicate directly with classmates and the professor, and it is very organized. Some disadvantages would be that it can be confusing at first and not everyone may be comfortable with using all the documents as others. Overall I definitely like using the blog and google documents.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed my overall experiences with the class blogger. I think that is neat how it works. This is the first time that I have ever used a blogger. Also goes for the Docs. I think that it is good that we are using this and being able to learn more about this kind of technology.
ReplyDeleteSome advantages are we are learning more about blogger and docs and etc. This we will know how to use it in the future and we will be familiar with this in the future and will have to look back on. The class blogger and just blogger and docs are interesting to know about.
Some disadvantages is this is still new to me so sometimes I feel like I am doing something wrong with the docs more so than with the blogger. Although, I am still learning how to use the blogger and docs and I am starting to get more comfortable with using it. The only bad thing with blogger and docs it is separate from D2L where as with my other classes it is all right there together. Then after the semester is over we will still have access to blogger and docs where with D2L it changes every semester.
So far I have mixed feelings about the blogger.
ReplyDeleteFor its the first time I've ever used ablog.
The advantages are that we can easily share assignments and communication is extremely easy. It is a great way to introduce new technology in the classroom.
Some of the disadvantages are that I had problems with my email address working at first. It gets to be a bit confusing. I don't check the blog everyday so Im not aware of the updates right away.
I like the google docs use, but I think the class blog is complicated. I think D2L is much easier to use and I'm not sure if I would like to use this in a classroom of 5th graders. I don't think they would be able to understand the concept and how to use a blog. It might be useful to use with highschoolers in a technology class. I think an advantage of the blog and google docs is that it helps me learn how to use technology more. I am not very good with computers so this is helping me increase my knowledge. The disadvantages are that it is hard to check the blog and D2L. All my other classes are on D2L, so I don't like going to another website and having to create an email to use a class blog. Overall, I don't really like using the class blog.
ReplyDeleteUsually, I'm not very techniqually smart. But, from being in this class I have learned how to do things that I didn't think I could do (ex. the blog and Google docs). At first, I hated the class blog, but now I really like it. It has taught me more about technology so I can use it in my future classroom. ge for us to learn hoe to use a blog because we won't always have D2L, but we will always have our blog. The only disadvanage is that we have remember to go to an additional website besides D2L. But, that isn't hard to remember now that you put announcements on D2L. Overall, I think its a big advantage for us as teachers. I really appriciate you working so hard to make things better for us. Thank you for putting the New's Announcements on D2L and for sending us stats of how we are doing so far. You put so much effort into this class! So THANK YOU!

ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed the opportunity to try something different with the computer based tools. The usual D2L is alright because it is what most of the teachers use but the positives stop there. Now majority of instructors use personal email over it. That means there are a different number of directions to go to when you have to contact someone. I like the blog because everyone can see what is going on at all times. The Google docs has it's own benefits for storing information and I'm sure once I get the hang of it sharing as well. The assignments stay in place for later review where D2L has everything deleted after a couple weeks so there is more room for the new. The blog will also be a nice future reference for us even after graduation so thanks for the new technology!
