ReplyDeleteSpeciation: Formation of two species from one species because of divergent natural selection in reponse to changes in environmental conditions; usually takes thousands of years.
Example: Arctic fox and gray fox.
Extinction: Complete disappearance of a species from the earth. It happens when a species cannot adapt and succesfully reproduce under new environmental conditions or when a species evolves into one or more new species.
Example: Dinosaurs and the Dodo birds (raphus cucullatus).
Specification is a detailed, exact statement of particulars, a statment prescribing materials, dimensions, and quality of work for something to be built.
ReplyDeleteEx. rabbits example, from where they adapt and live.
Extinictions is when a species has died and no longer exists because of changing conditions in their environment or competition.
Ex. do do bird, or dinosaurs( T-Rex) which died off.

ReplyDeleteAsk.com says speciation is the evolutionary formation of new biological species, usually by the division of a single species into two or more genetically distinct ones.
Wikipedia says extinction is the end of an organism or group. It's the moment of extinction is generally considered to be the death of the last individual of that species.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Wikipedia, extinction is the end of an organizsm or a group of taxa. Also, according to Wikipedia, speciation is the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise.
Extinction: The Dodo bird became extinct in 1651.
Speciation: The diversity of the three-spined stickleback (a marine fish that underwent speciation into freshwater colonies)

ReplyDeletespeciation: the process by which one or more populations of a species become genetically different enough to form a new species. This process often requires populations to be isolated for a long period of time. Example is the three spined stickleback marine fish that has different genera of fish including variations in fins, changes in the number or size of their bony plates, variable jaw structure, and color differences.
extinct: refers to a species that no longer exists. Local extinction occurs when every member of a particular population has died. Global extinction occurs when every member of a species has died. The passenger pigeon and the dodo are examples of globally extinct birds.

ReplyDeleteSpeciation: A speciation, according to Wikipedia, is "the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise."
Example: diversity of a marine fish, the three-spined stickleback, that has undergone speciation into new freshwater colonies in isolated lakes and streams after the last ice age.
Extinction: The end of an organism or group, either by a change in habitat or by human affects.
Example: Dinosaurs have been extinct for many years.

Extinction is the end of an organism. The moment of extinction is considered to be the the death of the last individual of that species. One example is the do do bird (this is a modern extinction).

ReplyDeleteExtinction is the death of the last organism of a species - the dodo bird (mid to late 17th century) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction
Speciation is the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise. An example of speciation is the Hawthorne Fly. Also known as the apple maggot fly, which appears to be undergoing speciation. Different populations of hawthorn fly feed on different fruits.

ReplyDeleteExtinction: is the do do bird and dinosaurs
Speciation: is the diversity of the three-spined stickleback a marine fish.

ReplyDeleteSpeciation is the evolutionary process in which new biological species arise. This can mean slight differences in ear length, as the rabbit example in class. Another example of this is "the diversity of the three-spined stickleback, a marine fish that, after the last ice age, has undergone speciation into new freshwater colonies in isolated lakes and streams. Over an estimated 10,000 generations, the sticklebacks show structural differences that are greater than those seen between different genera of fish including variations in fins, changes in the number or size of their bony plates, variable jaw structure, and color differences."
Extinction is the end of an organism. After the last one of that organism dies, that species is said to be extinct. Other than dinosaurs, A modern day example of this is the dodo bird. It has been extinct since the mid to late 17th century.

ReplyDeleteSpeciation is the evolutionary process by which new species arive. One example of natural speciation is the three spined stickleback. This fish was said to adapt from salt water to fresh water after the last ice age. It changed bone, scale, and fin structure.
Extinction is the end of an organism. An example of this concept would be the dodo that was killed off because it was slow and not afraid of humans.

ReplyDeleteExtinction: No longer existing. The dodo bird is an example of an animal that is extinct. Extintion is usually caused by a changing ecosystem.
Specifiction: Process by which one or more populations of a certain species become genetically different enough to become an entirely new species.Example: Three Spinned stickleback fish
Speciation is a process of evolution in which natural selection leads to the formation of a new species from one. Our text book gives a good example of speciation due to geographic isolation. The Arctic fox and the Gray fox were at one time one species. But because the Arctic fox was isolated to northern climates it adapted to its environment through the growth of heavier fur to keep it warm and white fur which helps it hide from predators when it crosses the snow.
ReplyDeleteExtinction happens when the entire species dies off. Unfortunately there are thousands of examples of extinction to choose from but the textbook chooses the male golden toad of Costa Rica. It became extinct because it was adapted to a wet climate and the climate suddenly dried up.
