=====Special Note=======
This class doesn't have an intention to promote or discourage any profit organizations. However, we try to observe and examine how a business company can relate some concepts that we have learned in the class and puts them into a commercial practice.
==================
Here are some pictures of the visit.
1) I have never been into Earth Fare before so that was a brand new experience for me. I really liked how they talked about how they use local farmers for their produce and foods. I liked that it seemed very important to them to try and stay local and help out the local farmers. Also how they recycle and are staying "green", I liked that also. I also liked how they have made these stores for people to become more healthy or have the choice of becoming healthier. One of the things I didn't really like was the cheese section and that's just because I don't like cheese. HA.
ReplyDelete2) Parent: How could I get my children to realize that organic food is still good, yet healthy?
Is the prices more expensive here than at regular supermarkets?
Teacher: What is the best way to get a connection with Earth Fare, so I can take my classroom on field trips here?
Student: Does Earth Fare help with Carbon Footprinting?
1. This was my first trip to Earth Fare. I found it an educational experience. I was intrigued by the fact that they have a list of things that they will not sell in their store such as hydrogenated oils, trans fats, etc. I was also impressed by how much they focus on staying local. I think it's great they help the local farmers and the local economy.
ReplyDelete2.Some Possible Questions:
Students- Are there career opportunitiesavailable? What are the benefits of eating organic food?
Teachers- How can I schedule a field trip? What are the benefits of taking a field trip to Earth Fare? Do you offer programs or other information that would educate the children on the benefits of eating healthier?
Parents- What is the price difference in Earth Fare and supermarkets, and is Earth Fare affordable? What are the benefits for my family of choosing Earth Fare over a regular supermarket?
1) I had never been to Earth Fare in my life. I had been wanting to go since it opened, but I felt it would be too expensive. Therefore, I continued my shopping at Wal-Mart. When I first walked into Earth Fare I loved it. I loved the look of the store, the atmosphere, even the music. I thought it smelled healthy! When we started to walk around the store, I began to like it even more. I just felt like if I shopped there I would have a healthier body and lifestyle. I liked the fact that they gave 5 cents to charity for every customer who used a reusable bag and asked a customer to donate 5 cents if they took a bag. Kate told us about a lot of different charities they are involved in which is great! My family owns a farm so I loved the fact that Earth Fare is all about buying locally. I think its great to support the farmers market and bring in different products all the time. It was just different than anything I have ever experienced before. What I didn't like was the prices. I just don't feel like it was affordable for college students, so maybe when I get out in the real world I can start shopping there.
ReplyDelete2) Questions-
Student: What is the top selling product at Earth Fare? When you say local, where do you mean?
Teachers: How can I make recycling an important part of the classroom? Can teachers buy sweet treats from this store since the treats are organic and enhanced with minerals?
Parents: If my child is only interested in video games, how can I get him involved with a healthy lifestyle? Does the milk you sell come from local cows?
I have never gone into Earth Fare, so it was a new experience for me. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the field trip. The store itself is neat and organized. I enjoyed seeing Halloween decorations and drawings on the black boards which contained information pertaining to the store. I was impressed with all Earth Fare does to help the local farmers. It is a nice gesture in today’s society for someone to notice the “little man.” Earth Fare’s success of obtaining healthy food from local areas is very impressive. Not only is Earth Fare helping the local economy, but it is also helping to reduce our carbon footprint. It is hard to find healthy food sometimes, so it is very convenient to have Earth Fare so close to campus. I like how Earth Fare has a dishwasher to supplement the trashing of disposable plates and utensils. The smoothie was excellent despite being healthy. Often I have the horrible mindset that if a treat is healthy it won’t taste as good. Fieldtrips to Earth Fare are a great idea to get children at a young age to be conscience of healthy choices and ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One idea for Earth Fare to consider is to have large recycle bins outside the store where people can recycle items. Other than that I think Earth Fare is doing an exceptional job and I will have to stop there next time I am going grocery shopping.
ReplyDeleteParent: How do your prices compare to other stores?
Teacher: What can children do to become involved in helping to reduce our carbon footprint?
Child: Do healthy cookies taste as good as the cookies that are not made with healthy ingredient?
I enjoyed the trip to the Earth Fare. I had never been there before so I enjoyed learning about what they had to offer. I like that they went into detail about where the products came from and that they emphasized stabilizing the local economy. Something that could have been better is if all the products could be affordable to all.
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
1. Do you offer helpful menu ideas to become familiar with the Earth Fare products? (Parent)
2. Is there a list of products that is healthier and comparable to the food children eat today? How can I incorporate these healthy lifestyle foods into the classroom? (Teacher)
3. Does Earth Fare partner with any schools for special programs? (student)
Our field trip was my first time every visiting an Earth Fare store and I was very impressed by its layout and the basic principles that the store is built upon. To me, shopping there would eliminate all the guess work of eating healthier because there isn't any harmful chemicals or anything artificial in the foods they sell. Specifically, I really enjoyed learning that Earth Fare supports local farmers and local economies instead of importing produce. I also thought it was neat that Earth Fare has little signs about recycling throughout the store and that they moved into an existing structure instead of building a brand new store. I would really like to shop there, but I think I could only on Wednesdays so I could get a 5% discount because some of the items are a bit expensive. I really enjoyed the samples we got to try and I wish we could have tried more things because it was delicious! I think it would have been really cool if Kate had sort of taken us through the activities they do for children's field trips to see if that is something we as future teachers would like to do with students. I overall enjoyed our Earth Fare experience.
ReplyDeleteParent: In what ways is Earth Fare more beneficial to my children's health than other supermarket chains? Are there various options that are more affordable in the store?
Teacher: What resources would you recommend that I use in my classroom to encourage healthy living, recycling, etc.? What age groups would you say respond the best to Earth Fare field trips from your previous experiences?
Student: Why should I choose organic food instead of processed food? What is the difference between the two? What is sustainability?
Going to Earth Fare was a new experience for me. I had never been because I had been told that their prices were unaffordable. But what I learned on our trip was that their prices were higher for a good reason. They had to be higher in order to support the local community. This is something I really liked about Earth Fare. I had never thought that because they were supporting a smaller business that it would raise the prices of their products. But, I think it is pretty amazing that Earth Fare cares enough to recognize the man at the bottom of the chain. Even though it does raise prices and Earth Fare might have to forego some sells, they continue to support locally. I also liked that they supported local soup kitchens. Instead of throwing day-old bread away, they gave it to the soup kitchens so that people without a food supply could eat. I thought it was awesome to see how much Earth Fare supported the local community! I also really liked how much they supported and pushed recycling and reducing our carbon footprint. However, I do wish they had recycling bins that we could take our 'trash" to. I also wish that we could have done the field trip as an elementary student would have done.
ReplyDeleteParent: How can I get my child to realize the importance of eating healthy so that he/she will do it willingly? What are the benefits from eating organically grown produce vs. other produce?
Student: What is sustainabilty? What are some simple ways I can ruduce my carbon footprint?
Teacher: How can I schedule a trip to Earth Fare and what is the ideal age group to bring? How can I raise the awareness of eating heath to the students in my classroom? What can we do ,as a class, to reduce our carbon footprint?
I have been to Earth Fare several times usually to buy organic produce or get something healthy for lunch. I love that they work with local farmers and pay them differently than larger companies. Businesses usually pay their suppliers monthly or even quarterly. This makes it almost impossible for micro-businesses to survive because their profit margins are so small they simply cannot wait for their money. I appreciate the fact that they work with indigenous groups around the world to ensure that workers are being paid fairly and are not simply part of the multinational corporate machine that destroys local environments and cultures. I thought it was impressive that they use excess heat generated from their refrigeration system to heat water.
ReplyDeleteQuestions I have for Earth Fare as a student, parent and member of the human race:
How are we going to keep genetically modified foods out of our food chain? Do they carry products derived from Monsanto technologies or Ricetec products? Would they be amenable to a ban on Monsanto and Ricetec products? Genetic modification of seed threatens our entire food supply, which is now in the hands of 10 multinational corporations, and Earth Fare being on the forefront of a healthier food movement could be a part of the solution!
Even though I live 5 minutes away from Earth Fare, I have never been before. I like to eat healthy, but I thought Earth Fare would be out of my budget. Looking around I seen that their prices are comparison to other grocery stores. I am big into fresh fruits and vegetables and I can never find good quality. I like the fact that they use local fruits and vegetables and looking around at them they seemed to look better then those at other stores. The staff at Earth Fare were very knowledgeable of their products and what they sell. I liked the idea that schools are taking their students to Earth Fare to learn about being healthy with what they eat and showing them to recycle. Showing these students healthy choices can make a difference in the long run about how they eat and how they can keep our carbon footprint down. It was a great experience and hope I can incorporate healthier ways in my life.
ReplyDeleteParent: Do you have any events to show parents how to cook healthier for my children and myself?
Student: Can you show me cheap ways to stay healthy with out going over my budget?
Teacher: How can my students and I incorporate recycling and eating healthy in the classroom?
1. My overall experience at Earth Fare was good; I had never been there before so it was different. Once you step into Earth Fare, you know you are not in a regular supermarket, what I mean by this is the trashcan that they have next to the door with the items that they will accept from their customers (that they do not sell) in order for their customers to get better products in return. I think this is a nice initiative from Earth Fare to get their customers to eat better. I also like that throughout the store they have signs telling you which products are local and which are organic. The only thing that I do not particularly care for with Earth Fare are the prices, although some of them are not as outrageous as I expected them to be. I do appreciate the fact that they support local farmers because my family farms (not around here), but I do know how much farmers depend on their customers because their crops will not always yield a fair amount of produce. I also liked the fact that each person in charge of a certain department in the store was very knowledgeable in what Earth Fare believes and the products in their department.
ReplyDelete2. Questions from each perspective:
Parent- What products can I get for an inexpensive price that my children will enjoy eating? Do you provide free cooking demonstrations or other activities that my children and I can attend to help us in eating healthy?
Teacher- Are there any resources that I can obtain from you in order to educate my students (and their parents) on eating organic foods and what the benefits are of eating organic? Can you show my students how sustainability is supported by Earth Fare? They are always interested to see how they can use something learned in our class in real life.
Student- Does the food taste gross? How do I know what foods are bad for me when I am shopping at other stores, and why I should buy food from Earth Fare instead?
I really enjoyed Earth Fare. I have only been in there once before and ate lunch. It was good. I love the fact that they support our locals. I will shop there soon. My concern is that some of the prices are a little high. Which is understandable. If all or most super markets would follow Earth Fare's standards then the prices would go down. They did have some good sales and coupons. It would be fun to take children there on a field trip and let them sample the foods and then tell them their nutritional values. I think the students would be surprised.
ReplyDelete1. I have actually shopped at the Earth Fare before and I really like it. I feel healthier and more eco-friendly when I shop there. I do not go often because the prices but the few times I went I bought fruits and vegetables there. I like how they are locally grown. I didn't know the cheese came from local farms though and I think that is really neat. I love the atmosphere of Earth Fare. The lights aren't like the fluorescent lights you see at the mainstream supermarkets so it makes the me feel more comfortable and calmer. The Earth Fare staff was really friendly and you could tell they cared about their job and bringing health awareness to anyone who is interested. I liked how they work with charities.
ReplyDelete2. Student- What are some foods that I would like that are better and healthier for me than the foods from other supermarkets?
Parent- Does Earth Fare have weekly coupons to make shopping more affordable?
Teacher- How can I bring healthy eating habits and recycling into my classroom?
I really enjoyed the field trip to Earth Fare. I love how they really believe in getting their products from local farmers, and how they will not stop buying from farmers who they've worked with for years, just because a new farmer might have better products. This trip was a great way to learn about the health issues that face us today. The staff was very educated in what they were talking about which also helps sell their product. Our guide was actually a mother of one of the students I tutor at South Side. I also like how they gave us samples to help promote their products. I think this was an overall great experience and I would love to do it again!
ReplyDeleteTeacher- How can I set up a field trip to visit Earth Fare?
Student- What are some items that I can afford from Earth Fare that are not too expensive?
Parent- How can I explain to my children that healthy food is better for them?
I enjoyed going to Earth Fare. This was the first time that I have ever been in Earth Fare. I have been meaning to go in this store I just always forget to or when I get out of class I just want to go straight home. I live in Greene County and we did not have any store like this. I can see me driving to JC to shop at Earth Fare though. I thought that this store was so neat, just to look at what all they have. My family likes to go to Earth Fare and shop. So I have heard about how neat it was before just did not think it was that neat. I thought that it was nice of them to give us cheese and smoothie samples. The only thing that I can think of that I did not like was I did not see anything for dogs for pets. Although I did not walk up and down every aisle. So they may carry something for pets. I have to always bring something home for you dog when I go shopping at any kind of store. I like how they support local farmers. Most of my family farms and that is great that Earth Fare does that for the community. I plan on going back for sure.
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
Student- What exactly is everything in the store for and how to cook with it? Is their different ways to cook than the normal ways or does it even matter?
Parent- Does Earth Fare sell cook books and any kind of books to help families live a healthier life?
Teacher- Would be good for students to go to Earth Fare just to experience how different it is than most stores and to learn more about their eating styles.
I really found the earth fare trip to be interesting. I had never been in that store and i never knew what it was all about. They really do seem like they are doing what they can to help support local organic farmers and reduce the affects that large chain grocery stores leave on our planet. I think i was most surprised to hear how much of the meats, fruits, and vegetables came from local farmers. Farms are such a big part of our local communities. I also thought it was a great idea for them to only move into existing structures. Every town has two or three abandoned targets or grocery stores. Its cool that they are recycling buildings and reducing the number of big stores at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI would like to ask them if they have made any attempts to give other groceries advice on how to run a "greener" store.
I've been to Earth Fare a couple of times before, but I this experience was different because we got to hear a detailed explanation of some of the things that went on in the store rather than just seeing organic fruits and eco-friendly packaging.
ReplyDeleteI like the atmosphere of Earth Fare, it isn't that bright white that you see in other supermarkets, the walls are earth-tone colors and the lighting is also softer. Like our guide was talking about, it feels like life is a little slower there, it doesn't feel like the rush of other groceries.
One of the things that I noticed this time was that a lot of their signs had where their products were from. For example, I noticed that some of their bananas were from Ecuador. Some other products were from Hickory, NC.
I think it's really neat that they know where all their meats are coming from. They don't just get delivered in a truck where the meat is coming from a packaging plant. Also, I didn't know that they actually fish for some of their fish and it doesn't come from a fish farm.
If I had to offer a critique, I would say that sometimes it seemed a little repetitive about the localness of their food, but it just goes to show how much they emphasize it in their business.
Questions for Earth Fare:
-Student: Do you offer cooking classes or like health classes to learn more about nutrition or how to use some of your products in cooking for the average college student?
-Parent: What are some ways to get the students excited about eating healthy?
-Teacher: Other than a tour of the store, what are some other field trip opportunities that would be good for elementary age kids to learn about a healthy, green lifestyle?
I had never been to Earth Fare before this field trip. I was surprised at the larger variety of items they had than a regular grocery store. There were many more types of cheese, meat, and fruits than you normally see. Also, I was shocked at the price ranges. Some things were very high while others were close or the same as at any other store. This made the locally grown items a little more evident, since they do cost more coming from a smaller farm.
ReplyDeleteQuestions for Earth Fare:
Parent: What items does Earth Fare have to compare to my children's favorite foods that are not nutritionally good for them?
Student: There are a some of items in the produce section I have not heard much about. Can someone at Earth Fare tell me how to use them?
Teacher: Could Earth Fare do a field trip specific to a specific culture unit we are studying in class?
1. I enjoyed Earth Fare and all that it has to offer. The fact that they practice sustainability, support local farming, and also promote healthy eating is important to me. They try to reduce their foot print while maintaining one of the faster growing grocery stores. Most of Earth Fare is great and their aren't any bad points to me besides how they plan to achieve what they achieve now if they become very large.
ReplyDelete2. Some of the questions I feel are important to ask Earth Fare are what are your future goals and plans with respect to recycling, maintaining a controlled foot print, and reaching out to the public with respect to Earth conscience knowledge.
That was my first time at earth fare. I really enjoyed hearing about how the food was and how healthy the food was. It was very intersting that most food comes from local farmers.
ReplyDeleteParent: How can I get my family to understand this food is better?
Teacher: How would I arrange a field trip for the class?
Student: Can I learn more as a student about how the food is cooked and how much better is the food over others?
1. The field trip to Earth Fare was very interesting and informative. I feel like they are making a mostly positive impact in the local area by presenting leadership in sustainability and there undying support to local farms. The main problem is the expense, because even though provide many benefits it is still not cost effective for the majority of grocery customers.
ReplyDelete2. I believe a question that would be important to ask Earth Fare would be: How will you compete with larger companies for customers as Earth Fare expands? What can Earth Fare do to keep the quality of their services high as they grow as a company?
1. This was the first time i had ever been in the Earth Fare. It was a very interesting experience where i learned alot of information that i didn't know. The attempt to make people aware of the difference between organic food and food we typically eat is a good way to persuade people to eat healther food.
ReplyDelete2 Parents- Is there a way to get my family to like food after eating typical food for years.
Teachers- How can i arrange a field trip.
Student- Can i eat this food and still stay on the same budget.
This was my first trip to Earth Fare. I'd heard some really awesome things about it when it was first opening and how the food was so great there and it looked really cool and stuff like that. I also heard that their food was really expensive and I don't grocery shop in Johnson City, so I just never took the time to go in there. This trip over there thoroughly impressed me. The overall aesthetics of the store were very impressive and inviting, the products looked incredible, and even more than that, the staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, and inviting which to me is huge especially at a grocery store when the main focus usually is just to make a profit. I was very impressed by the knowledge of the employees at each individual department and I got a sense of unity of the mission of Earth Fare from every person that we spoke to. My first inquiry was about their sustainable ideas besides just food. I was very impressed to hear all about their green path and all they do as a store to help sustainability. They open their stores in already existing buildings, use concrete floors, they recycle, etc. Lastly, they encourage healthy living which is huge in our nation right now and frankly something that needs to catch on quickly. Overall, this experience has made me want to reconsider doing my grocery shopping there.
ReplyDeleteParent- Do you have any recipe or cook books that utilize your products so I can cook healthy, delicious meals for my family?
Teacher- Do you do any out of store activities that students could participate in, or do you host cooking classes about nutrition for kids?
Student- On my limited budget, it is really viable for me to be able to do all my grocery shopping here, it is a considerable difference between here and a normal grocery store?
